Six months after your kitchen renovation, one of the cabinet doors no longer sits flush. There’s a gap along the top edge that wasn’t there before, and the door swings open slightly instead of staying closed. Nothing broke. Nothing was misused. The door just moved.

Wood and wood-composite materials are porous. They absorb moisture from the air and release it as conditions change. Singapore’s humidity sits close to 80% for most of the year, which means that cycle never really stops.
The door expands when humidity is high and contracts when air-conditioning pulls it back down. Over time, that constant movement works into the grain and stresses the panel. A door that was flat on installation day starts to bow.
Kitchens intensify the problem. A wok flame running for an hour at dinner pushes heat and steam directly at the cabinet fronts. The door takes the worst of it while the cabinet carcass behind, sealed inside the unit, stays comparatively untouched. This is why kitchen cabinet doors warp far more often than the box itself does.
Poor Material Choices and Uneven Finishing Make It Worse

For mild panel warping, applying evenly distributed pressure across the door over several days can encourage it to return to flat. Controlled moisture on the concave face is another method, though results vary considerably.
Severely warped doors, or those built from low-quality substrate material, are generally better replaced than repaired. The structural integrity isn’t there to hold a correction long-term.
Even a successful repair is temporary if the underlying cause isn’t addressed. The replacement door needs the right substrate, the right balance of finishes, and properly sealed edges, or the same movement will begin again.
How to Prevent Warped Cabinet Doors in Singapore Kitchens
Start With the Right Materials

Steam management is worth thinking through at the design stage. Moving the hob away from cabinet runs where the layout permits reduces direct heat on the door fronts. A well-specified extractor hood with a strong draw helps further. Even well-made doors benefit from less direct exposure over years of cooking.
Hardware quality plays a role too. A soft-close hinge, correctly calibrated, holds the door in proper position every time it closes. A worn or poorly fitted hinge lets the door hang unevenly, placing uneven stress on the panel over time. That uneven loading compounds any moisture-related movement already in progress.
A Problem Worth Getting Right at the Start
Warping is almost always a decision made at the design and material stage. The substrate, the finishing method, and the edge sealing determine how a door responds to Singapore’s climate over years of use. Get those right at the outset, and the doors stay flat. Get them wrong, and the problem shows up within months.
